Salt-n-Pepa were more pop-oriented than many of their contemporaries, since their songs were primarily party and love anthems, driven by big beats and interlaced with vaguely pro-feminist lyrics that seemed more powerful when delivered by the charismatic and sexy trio. Hot, Cool, & Vicious is the 1986 debut album by American rap group Salt'n Pepa. Released by Next Plateau Records on December 8, 1986, it was one of the first albums to be released by an all-female rap group. Hot, Cool, & Vicious also became the first album by a female rap group act to attain gold and platinum status in America.

The album features the songs 'The Show Stoppa (Is Stupid Fresh)' and 'I'll Take Your Man', recorded and released prior to the full album's release. It also includes R&B radio favorites 'Tramp' and 'My Mic Sound Nice', but it was after the 1987 addition of the hip-hop single 'Push It' (US #19, UK #2), along with the replacement of two other tracks with remixed versions, that the album was propelled to gold, then platinum status in America. The single itself was also certified platinum. In 1998, Hot, Cool, & Vicious was listed in The Source's 100 Best Rap Albums. According to Salt-n-Pepa, they provided some additional uncredited lyrics to the album.[clarification needed]

Salt-N-Pepa launched their career with 'The Showstopper,' a goofy parody of Doug E. Fresh's 'The Show.' There wasn't any real reason for it -- then as now, rappers dis each other just to get noticed -- but the three women quickly proved they were more than just a novelty song. On Hot, Cool & Vicious, they land their own megahit in 'Push It,' five minutes of electro-bass ecstasy; and 'Tramp,' a clever update of the Otis Redding & Carla Thomas classic. With go-go and 808 beats from Salt's boyfriend Hurby Azor, this album captures the innocence and fun of hip-hop's original golden age.
